The global fast-food chain has taken down a Christmas commercial produced using AI after receiving considerable criticism on social media.

The short film was developed using generative AI clips and was initially published online for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.

Viewer Response and Decision to Pull

Soon after it aired, commenters denounced the employment of AI in the advert. Many labeled it "disturbing" and "awkwardly stitched together".

"This experience serves as an key learning as we examine the proper use of AI," said a statement from McDonald's Netherlands.

The commercial was created for McDonald's by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and US production company The Sweetshop. It portrayed a series of situations that might go awry during the holidays, using the slogan "the most terrible time of the year".

The Phenomenon of AI-Generated Ads

Commercials that include AI-created content have emerged as a rising trend among large brands, especially for the holiday period.

  • Another beverage giant has also released back-to-back AI-created Christmas commercials.
  • Inherent Limitations: Because clips produced using generative AI are prone to become unstable the longer they run, the majority of such clips tend to be about six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The video also raised concerns about job displacement in the advertising sector, with some commenters stating it might negatively impact work for production staff.

Response from the Creators

After the commercial being pulled, a producer's CEO, Melanie Bridge, stood by the advert.

She stated, the production process took "over a month and a half" and involved producing "thousands of takes" which were then crafted afterward "in the same way we would on any standard production".

"This was not an experiment," she commented. "It was a proper commercial."

Mixed Audience Sentiment

While the McDonald's commercial was largely panned, the reception for some AI-generated holiday ads has been more mixed.

For instance, a consecutive AI-created Christmas ad from Coca-Cola according to analysis achieved a 61% "positive feedback" from viewers.

However, various brands have likewise faced backlash for employing AI in marketing. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was lambasted for advertisements that some called "cheap" and "disturbing".

The episode highlights the continuing discussion within the advertising and creative sectors about the balance between AI efficiency and creative integrity.
